Japan to Test Drill for Frozen Natural Gas Under Seabed

Japan plans to start trial drilling in 2012 to extract frozen natural gas buried under the seabed and test if the methane hydrate is a viable next-generation fuel. The government will lead test production of the frozen methane in an ocean trench called the Nankai Trough about 30 miles (50 kilometers) off the coast of the country's main Honshu Island, according to a document distributed at a trade ministry panel meeting in Tokyo today. Japan will extend by 2 years a 16-year frozen methane project started in 2001 to find out if the fuel is suitable for commercial production. Source: Bloomberg.com

U.S. Warned on Deficiency in Icebreakers

The National Academy of Sciences, the Coast Guard and others have warned over the past several years that the United States’ two 30-year-old heavy icebreakers, the Polar Sea and Polar Star, and one smaller ice-breaking ship devoted mainly to science, the Healy, are grossly inadequate. Also, the Polar Star is out of service. A resurgent Russia has been busy expanding its fleet of large oceangoing icebreakers to around 14, launching a large conventional icebreaker in May and, last year, the world’s largest icebreaker, named 50 Years of Victory, the newest of its seven nuclear-powered, pole-hardy ships.
